The tragic situation of the Jewish victims of the disastrous flood which recently inundated Poland was particularly emphasized today by a survey conducted by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
Provisional figures show that as a result of the flood over 2,000 Jewish families are utterly without any means of support and more than 3,000 Jewish families are without shelter or adequate clothing.
The majority of those who lost their homes and all their possessions are living in synagogues, huddled together under dreadfully unsanitary conditions, while many are still camping out under the open sky.
Especially tragic is the position of the flood victims in the region around Jaslo and also at Nowysancz, Mielec and Limanow.
In many places the water is poisoned and victims find it impossible to secure water for drinking purposes.
The Jewish communities at Sandomierz and Stuczyn asked the Jewish Telegraphic Agency to broadcast the news that hundreds of Jewish families are without bread at Sandomier, while eighty Jewish families are in similar straits at Stuckzyn.
At Grzybow a Gentile woman named Paszkowa, owner of a local brewery, adopted fifty-two Jewish children from Nowysancz and is feeding them.
In many villages the poor peasants are showing the greatest kindness to the thousands of Jewish victims, housing them and sharing their meager rations with them.
