Aliens in certain “non-immigrant categories now in the United States on a temporary status may become permanent residents under a provision of the Refugee Relief Act of 1953, but have only until June 30 to make the change. Arthur Greenleigh, executive director of United Hias Service, announced today.

The Act allows for 5,000 aliens who apply, and are eligible, to become permanent residents of the United States. It affects visitors and regular students-not exchange students-who lawfully entered the United States before July 1, 1953 on a temporary basis and now under regular immigration quotas. “If these non-immigrants can show that they cannot return to the country of their birth, nationality, or last residence for fear of persecution of race, religion or political opinion they are eligible to become permanent residents in the United States,” Mr. Greenleigh stated.
