More than 50,000 Chanukah gifts will be distributed this week among Jewish members of the American armed forces in all parts of the world, it was announced today by the National Jewish Welfare Board. Chanukah will be ushered in tomorrow evening.
The gifts have been packaged by the JWB’s women’s division and shipped to all overseas areas where U.S. troops are stationed. They include pipes, wallets, games, books, records, dreidels and holiday foods, which the Jewish chaplains will load into their jeeps and carry to the remotest posts. There are 26 Jewish chaplains now serving overseas.
Chanukah services will be held from Korea to Greenland and the Chanukah candies will be lighted at ceremonies in the Philippines, Hawaii, Guam, North Africa, Europe, Alaska, Iceland and the Caribbean. There will also be community candle-lighting services for GI’s at many military posts in this country where huge lighted Menorahs have been erected.
