The sum of $50,000 was raised for the Herzlia Hebrew Teachers’ Institute at a testimonial dinner in honor of Dr. Emanuel Neumann, at the Hotel Pierre, last night, at which Dr. Neumann called for “a drastic change of policy” in Jewish community budgeting, with greater emphasis on Jewish education.
“We are still spending too much on the pathological aspects of Jewish life–charity, relief and defense against anti-Semitism–and too little on the constructive and creative aspects fostering our Jewish heritage and Hebraic culture, “Dr. Neumann said. He urged American Zionists “to spearhead a nationwide effort” to effect the required change in order to ensure Jewish spiritual survival in America. Professor Salo Baron of Columbia University was a guest speaker, and Abraham Goodman, chairman of the board of trustees of the Institute, was toastmaster.
