A drive for $500,000 for the building of a world memorial in Paris for the Jews annihilated by the Nazis was launched here today by an America committee which includes Sen. Herbert Lehman, Edward M.M. Warburg, Dr. Nahum Goldmann, Jacob Blaustein, David Dubinsky, Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver and other prominent personalities. An appeal to American Jews to send their contributions to the committee, which is to be known as the “World Memorial for Jewish Martyrs,” was issued by the leaders of the organization.
Addressing a press conference, Isaac Schneerson, noted French Jewish leader and head of the Jewish Documentation Center in Paris, who came here to spur the drive, revealed that his group is in possession of about 400,000 original documents dealing with the deportation of Jews and other anti-Jewish measures signed by top Nazi officials. These documents will be placed in the memorial building.
He appealed to Jews in the United States to send in the names of their relatives who perished under the Nazis so that these names can be entered in “The Book of Martyrs” which will immortalize those killed under the Nazi regime. The book will also be placed in the memorial building, for which the Paris municipality has donated a site in the vicinity of the City Hall.
