53 Non-rumanian Jews Allowed to Sail for Israel

The Israel liner Eylath sailed from Constanza for Haifa today carrying 53 non-Rumanian Jews. The Rumanian Government withheld permission for 183 Rumanian Jews, holding individual passports and exit visas, to sail on the ship.

An Israel legation spokesman said that the government based its refusal on a charge–denied by the legation–that the legation attempted to organize “collective emigration” of Rumanian citizens. The spokesman stressed that the usual procedure had been followed. He said that an Israel vessel was to have moved the emigrants, rather than the Rumanian liner Transylvania, and voiced the belief that the government was possibly “aiming to assure the Rumanian liner exclusive passenger transport to Israel.”
