Fifty-four Palestine Jewish internees escaped from the Sembal internment camp in the Sudan, it was learned here today. Thirty are reported to have been recaptured.
The report says that the 54 seized a bus and attempted to reach Ethiopia, but were forced to scatter and make their way on foot when the vehicle broke down. They escaped from the camp through two tunnels which they had previously dug from their quarters to a point beyond the camp gates.
British and colonial troops as well as Eritrean tribesmen are being used to track them down. Twenty-three of the Jews surrendered to a local native official who turned them over to the British. The other seven were captured by military and civil police in the vicinity of Asmara, Eritrea.
