More than 700 people attended the $250-a-plate 12th annual Scopus Award dinner given by the American Friends of the Hebrew University here last night in honor of Diane and Arthur B. Belfer “for their outstanding leadership and contributions to the Hebrew University and the cause of higher learning.” Samuel Rothberg, chairman of the university’s Board of Governors reported that miscellaneous gifts totaling nearly $5 million were received to advance the Hebrew University’s program for disadvantaged youth and for research in Israel.
Mayor John V. Lindsay proclaimed yesterday as “American Friends of the Hebrew University. Brotherhood Through Education Day” and urged “all our citizens to support the Hebrew University which set a three-fold aim of service to the cause of human progress, to the Jewish people and to the State of Israel, working toward the solution of scientific, social and educational problems, for the benefit of all mankind.”
Avraham Harman, the Hebrew University president, described the history of the university, the first and largest Jewish university, and said it was an institution in pursuit of excellence, serving Israel and the Jewish people. He emphasized the university role as the mother of other Israeli universities and as the university of the Jewish people.
