A total of 6,074 Jews, chiefly from Poland, entered Austria during the first two weeks of July, Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein, advisor on Jewish Affairs to Gen. Joseph T. McNarncy, said here today following his return from an inspection trip to Austria. A further influx of Polish Jews is expected, he added.
Rabbi Bernstein contrasted this “tremendous” migration rate with the 2,234 Jews who entered the country during May and the 6,647 arriving in June. He said that 94 percent of the Jews entering the country since July 1 come from Poland while the remaining six percent are from Rumania, Hungary and other countries.
He praised the attitude and “sympathetic understanding” shown by Gen. Mark Clark, American commander in Austria, and other military officials towards the Jewish problems in that country. However, he pointed out, Austrian Jews are dissatisfied with their government’s handling of the property restitution program.
Rabbi Bernstein, who is leaving tomorrow for a week’s tour of Poland, stated that he had submitted educational material concerning the Jewish problem to the Army’s information and education section for orientation training for newly arrived troops.
