An army of 60,000 volunteers visited the homes of 700,000 contributors to the United Jewish Appeal in communities throughout the United States today, which has been designated by the United Jewish Appeal as National “C” pay, in an intensive effort to raise record sums to insure the continued emigration and absorption in Israel of Jews from Europe and the Moslem countries for the balance of 1950.
In a cable, Henry Morgenthau, Jr., U.J.A. general chairman, who is now in Israel for consultation with government officials there, emphasized that failure to realize substantial amounts of cash in the United States today “may seriously jeo pardize the mass movement of Jews to Israel from Iraq and North Africa.” The deadlines are “rapidly approaching for many thousands of Jews whose right to leave the countries in which they now reside may soon be withdrawn,” Mr. Morgenthau said. “The situation is too tense to permit even slight delays.”
