Seven families of self-styled Black Hebrews from the United States were arrested in Jericho yesterday and served with deportation orders. The families were charged with remaining in Israel illegally after their one-month tourist visas expired and with establishing residence in an occupied area without permission of the Military Government. The families have three days to appeal the deportation orders to the Supreme Court.
Similar orders issued for eight other black families are to be served later this week. There was no word today on the status of several hundred black Hebrews who began coming to Israel two years ago and were granted temporary residents permits although they claimed citizenship under the Law of Return. Most of them are quartered in the Negev town of Dimona.
