Despite the fact that Jewish refugees and DP’s have been entering Austria throughout the year, over 7,200 Jews were resettled from Austria during the first eight months of 1949 and the total number in the country dropped from over 12,000 at the beginning of the year to slightly under 8,000 at the end of August, Harry Greenstein, retiring adviser on Jewish affairs to the U.S. Army in Europe, revealed here during the last official visit to Austria.
Mr. Greenstein, who conferred with American commander Lt. Gen. Geoffrey Keyes and other high American officials, disclosed that nearly 5,000 of the Jews who left here during the first eight months of the year went to Israel, while another 1,800 went to the United States. He added that ho felt that the most difficult problem in evacuating the Jewish DP’s from Austria was the disposition of persons too old or too ill to be resettled.
