More than 7,000 workers in two of Israel’s key industries went on strike today.

Some 3,000 workers in Israel’s diamond processing industry, top earner of foreign currency for the state, struck in a dispute over cost of living allowances. Another 4,000 employees of the Palestine Electric Corporation, which produces power for the entire country, walked out in a demand for improved pension benefits.

Histadrut, the general federation of labor, did not give its approval to the strike against the utility.
