The number of Jews living now in Casablanca and its environs was estimated today by Jewish leaders here as being about 50,000, or about 75 percent of the entire Jewish population of Morocco. This contrasts with figures published this week by the central University of Science Research indication that 35,000 Jews reside in Casablanca now and station that they constitute one-half of the Jewish population in the country.
The number of Jews holding important posts in the Moroccan civil service rose to about 15 today with the appointment of Haim Benisty as director of service equipment at the National Irrigation Office, an important post in the Government.
Other Moroccan Jews in Government civil service are Andre Lamy and Gabriel Tobaly at the Ministry of Economics, Solomon Azoulay, a member of the Constitutional Council, Albert Sasson, Rector of the Faculty if Science, Solomon Bensabat, Judge of the Supreme Court and Robert Asseraf, an official in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Councillor in the Moroccan National Juridical Assembly.
M. Assouline is director of Government planning, M. Benzimra is a member of the- Cabinet in the Agriculture Ministry, Abraham Serfaty is a director in the Office for Phosphates, M. Hamou is director at the of Research and Abraham Zaoui is director of the Land Conservation Office.
