Two groups of Jewish refugees, numbering 71, have been arrested by the Italian police and are in danger of being imprisoned on the Lipari Islands, near Naples, it was revealed here today.
The Jews are DP’s who crossed the Austro-Italian border illegally on two separate occasions. The first group of 25 were arrested last week but subsequently released when they furnished documents stating that they were residents of Turin. However, when the second group was apprehended the police became suspicious and re-arrested the 25. Rafaelo Cantoni, president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, has intervened in their behalf.
It was learned during the week-end that before the International Refugee Organization extends relief to refugees in this country every case will be investigated by an I.R.O. commission. New arrivals will be kept in a transit camp at Nilan for three weeks where they will be photographed, given a complete medical check and provided with clothing and blankets before they are assigned to permanent camps.
