The devotion and service of 74 Jewish chaplains serving in the state and city prisons and pubic and voluntary supported hospitals in New York was lauded today during ceremonies at Beth Israel Hospital arranged by the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies.
The citation noted that the visiting chaplains bring “the warmth of human devotion to the friendless, the troubled, the sick, in hospitals, institutions and prisons” and praised them for performing a singular service “with such simple instruments as understanding and love, with insights given to few men.” Jewish chaplains serve about 250,000 persons annually in 154 institutions throughout New York State.
