An observance of the 50th anniversary of the Joint Distribution Committee, was a highlight of the 1964 Inaugural Dinner of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York, held tonight at the Americana Hotel. More than 700 guests announced pledges to this year’s New York UJA drive that put it above the $8,500, 000 mark at its official opening.
Israel’s Deputy Prime Minister Abba Eban made the principal address at the dinner, which was presided over by Charles C. Bassine, a vice-chairman of the board of the UJA of Greater New York. Other speakers included Edward M.M.Warburg, chairman of the JDC; Charles Mayer and Jack D. Weiler, chairmen of the New York UJA’s Trustees; and Sol Cantor, a general chairman of its 1964 campaign.
In a tribute to the Joint Distribution Committee for half a century of humanitarian service, that has benefited an estimated 4, 000, 000 persons, Mr. Warburg was presented with a silver plate bearing this inscription: “Presented to the American Joint Distribution Committee on its 50th Anniversary, Through the perseverance, devotion and dedication of its leadership and staff it has redeemed the lives of many hundreds of thousands and written a proud chapter in the history of man’s humanity to man.”
