Approximately 8,000 Jews in the Carpatho-Ukraine will become Soviet citizens as a result of that part of Czechoslovakia joining the USSR as a section of the Ukraine, it was reported here today.

Of the 90,000 Jews who were deported by the Germans from the Carpatho- Ukraine to various extermination camps in Poland and Germany, only 8,000 have returned, the report said. They include 1,000 Jews of Munkacevo, where the Jewish population totalled 17,000 prior to the deportations. The surviving Jews have organized themselves into Jewish communities and opened soup kitchens. However, they lack funds to carry on this work, and they are especially in need of clothing for the repatriated deportees. In some towns the repatriates are voluntarily rebuilding the synagogues which were destroyed by the Germans.
