There were 83 new Jewish Community Center and YM-Y WHA buildings erected in the United States and Canada in the 15 years since the end of World War II, it is reported in the JWB Year Book, published by the National Jewish Welfare Board today.
One or more new buildings were opened since 1945 in 78 different communities in 26 states and three Canadian provinces. Aggregate cost of this new construction amounted to $80,000,000, according to the Year Book’s detailed summary of new Center facilities.
The largest number of new Center buildings was opened in the Midwest where 20 Jewish Community Centers occupied brand new facilities during this period. There were also nine new Centers erected in the Far West and Rocky Mountain region, nine in New England, nine in New Jersey, nine in Middle Atlantic area, eight in the South, eight in Canada and eight in the Greater New York area. In up-state New York there were three new Centers built.
