More than eight out of ten West Germans say they do not want to see a man like Hitler in power again. This fact emerged here today from a public opinion poll carried out in August, now published in a government bulletin.
Five percent of those questioned, favored having another Hitler, 85 percent did not, and 10 percent refused comment. The same question was asked in 1958. Since then, the proportion of men desiring another Hitler declined from 14 percent to six percent, and for women, from six percent to four percent.
Most of those favoring another Hitler are between 30 and 50 years old. The number of Nazis brought to trial in the German courts during the past two years, and the swastika-smearing epidemic early this year, were said to have something to do with this hardening of public opinion.
