The 85-year old widow of Max Liebermann, one of Germany’s most famous painters of the pre-Hitler era, has committed suicide in Berlin, according to an article in the Swiss newspaper St. Galler Tagblatt, reported to the Office of War Information today. The newspaper said that as a Jew Mrs. Liebermann was to be deported by the Nazis and that she could not secure sufficient “ransom money.” Max Liebermann’s paintings hung in most continental galleries. At one time he was president of the Academy in Berlin. He died in 1935.
