More than 900 Jewish communal leaders from all parts of this country and Canada will gather at the four-day 27th General Assembly of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, opening here next Thursday, to deliberate on the major issues facing American Jewry. The advance registration of more than 900 is the largest in the history of the CJFWF, according to Herbert R. Abeles, Council president.
The delegates from communities across the nation will determine guides for fund-raising, health and welfare planning, and budgeting to meet Jewish needs at home and abroad in the coming year. The Jewish communal leaders will take part in 70 workshops and other sessions.
The opening session November 13 will feature a series of personal reports by Council leaders on the future of American-Israel relations. Reporting will be members of a CJFWF delegation which recently toured Israel, meeting with top Israeli officials and reviewing the current situation in Israel and what kind of aid Israel will need in its drive for self-sufficiency. The reports will also include eye-witness reports of programs and services at various institutions and installations around the-country, and a summary of discussions with American officials involved in the U.S. Point Four program in Israel.
Another highlight of the annual session will be the presentation of the William J. Shroder Memorial Awards by Sidney Hollander of Baltimore, and the presentation of the Edwin Rosenberg Awards by Julian Freeman of Indianapolis. In addition, the Large City Budgeting Conference will hold general sessions and joint budget reviews before the Assembly opens and during the Assembly itself.
