The S.S. Metrua carrying 991 Jewish refugees from Europe docked at Haifa yesterday after a six-day voyage from Toulon, France.
The 460 men, 316 women, 194 children and 21 infants on board came from France, Belgium and Switzerland. Among the contingent from the latter country was David Frankfurter, who was released from a Swiss prison in June after serving nine years for assassinating Nazi leader Wilhelm Gustloff. Two of the youngsters still were the monastery gowns given them while they were sheltered by the Catholic clergy.
The arrivals expressed their gratitude for the cooperation and assistance given them in France prior to their departure by American, French and English authorities.
