It was unclear why members of the Westboro Baptist Church failed to appear as planned on Tuesday to protest Hebrew Union College’s support for gay rabbis and gay marriage. The HUC administration had reacted to the protest threat by closing the campus and inviting faculty and students to a voluntary teach-in.
