A bill permitting houses of worship to endorse political candidates and contribute to their campaigns was defeated in the U.S. House of Representatives. Lawmakers voted 239-178 on Wednesday against the bill, which would have amended the tax code to permit a church to participate in a political campaign and maintain its tax-exempt status as long as the involvement was not a “substantial part” of its activities.
