A Bundestag member who compared West Germany’s school system unfavorably with that of the Nazi era has drawn ongry protests from a variety of groups in the state of Hesse. Walter Picard, a member of the opposition Christian Democratic Union said at an election rally that political indoctrination in today’s schools in Hesse is even worse than it was under the Nazis. Protests came from the Association of Hesse Teachers, the Social Democratic Party and several other organizations. One statement noted that Picard ignored the fact that under the Nazis, Jewish pupils were expelled from German schools as a matter of policy.
