A campaign against the numerus clausus in the countries of Eastern Europe has been initiated by the committee of Jewish organizations here. Large public meetings of protest will be held at which the Jewish students of the higher schools of Salonica will be present. The French newspapers here contain long articles protesting against the existence of the numerus clausus in the so-called democratic countries in Central Europe. The papers demand that the League of Nations should act in order to bring about the repeal of the numerus clausus.

The Board of Trustees, the Sisterhood and the Mothers’ Association of the West End Synagogue, New York City, will give a reception Sunday aftermoon in the vestry room, of the synagogue for Dr. and Mrs. Frederic de Sola Mendes in hotlor of the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage.

Dr. Memles has been rabbi of Shasray Tefila for more than fifty years. This congregation was organized in 1815, with the Rev. Samuel M. Isaace acting as its first minister. Dr. Mendes succeded him, delivering his first sermon before this cougregation in 1873. He officiated as its rabbi until 1920, when he was made rabbi emeritus, and was succeded by Dr. Nathan Stern. the preseni rabbi.

Dr. Mendes founded “The American Hebrew”, and was its editor during its first six years (1879-1885). He was an editor of The Jewish Encyclopedia and chief of its translation bureau. He was also an editor of the New Bible Translation and of The Jewish Classics.

A bill aimed at abolishing the teaching of the thoery of evolution in the public schools of New Hampshire was killed in the Committee on Education of the State House of Representatives.
