A census of Ethiopians waiting to immigrate to Israel has found that 26,196 individuals comprise what the survey describes as “the remnants of Ethiopian Jewry.” The privately funded survey, which was taken between February and August and released Thursday, investigates the Jewish ancestry and ties to relatives in Israel of the immigrant hopefuls, known as the Falash Mura. Israel does not recognize the Jewishness of the group, most of whom are descendants of Christian converts who wish to return to Judaism.
