A check for $10,000 was presented to Nahum Sokolow, chairman of the World Zionist Executive at the dinner held at the Jewish Community Center here to mark the formal start of a drive for $25,000 in Hudson County for the United Palestine Appeal. The presentation was made by Harry Goldowsky, chairman of the campaign advisory committee who acted as toastmaster.
A joint drive in the interests of the Gewerkschaften and the United Palestine Appeal was opened in Passaic. N. J. Wednesday night with a reception in honor of former Mayor David Bloch, of Tel Aviv.
Several hundred representatives of synagogues and Jewish organizations affiliated with the Brownsville and East New York Division of the United Palestine Appeal, will attend the organization conference at the Pennsylvania. Avenue Talmud Torah, Brooklyn. Sunday evening to formulate plans for completing the campaign in that section.
More than $70,000 has been raised to date in the Brownsville. East New York. Boulevard and New Lots sections, J. H. Cohen, president of the appeal, announced. An additional $10,000 is expected to be raised.
Funeral services will be held today for the late Harry Asher. prominent New Haven attorney, who died in New York on Wednesday at the age of 71.
Mr. Asher was formerly president of the New Haven Board of Education and secretary of the class of 1879. Sheffield Scientific School at Yale. He resided in New Haven until two years ago. He was a founder of the New Haven Building and Loan Association and of the People’s Bank and Trust Company and a member of the Graduate and Harmonie clubs.
A meeting in honor of Dr. Albert Einstein’s fiftieth birthday was held at the College of the City of New York yesterday under the auspices of college Zionist Circle and the Menorah Society. Dr. Solomon Liptzen of the German department of the college presided. Speakers were Dr. Max Talmey. Dr. Martin Meyer of the chemistry department and James Waterman Wise.
A Community Fund for the purpose of taking care of the various charities in Superior. Wisconsin. including Jewish charities, conducting one drive a year for current expenses, is now being organized with A. H. Shapiro of Superior in charge.
