### The conflict in Jerusalem ###und the question of who ###all be the vice mayor of the ###y was finally settled yester###y in favor of Daniel Auster, ### General Zionist.
### Unfair as it was on the part ### the Palestine government to ### point Mr. Auster without ###nsulting the Vaad Leumi, ### Jewish National Council ###Palestine, it was equally un-###r for the Vaad Leumi, ###ich is controlled by the ###borites, to raise an issue ###ainst Mr. Auster to such a ###gree as to cause a split in ###lestine Jewry.
Mr. Auster, the new vice###yor of Jerusalem, is a Gen###al Zionist supported by no ###s a figure than M. M. Us###shkin, in whom the entire ### wish world has great confi###nce. Mr. Auster has de###ted many years to fighting ###r Jewish representation in ###e Jerusalem municipality. ###e, more than anyone else in ###alestine, was active in or###nizing the Jewish ###population in Jerusalem to partici###te in the municipal elections. ###he extreme opposition to him, ###hich was on the verge of ###ecipitating a break even in ###e ranks of the Vaad Leumi, ###as therefore hardly justified.
The fight against Mr. Aus###r’s appointment is another ###ustration of the efforts of ###e Laborites to dominate Jewish life in Palestine and to ###ush all the forces of the ###ishtty which are not in agree###ent with them. The opposi###on of the Left Wing groups ### Mr. Auster’s appointment ### quite easy to explain from ### partisan viewpoint. No party ###ishes to see its opponent oc###pying a leading position in ###ublic life. It is difficult, how###ver, to explain it from a ###Jewish national viewpoint. Jewish national interests in Pales###ne require unity and not sit###ations which lead to a split### the Vaad Leumi or to the ###alking out from a conference ### a national figure like Mr. ###ssishkin. It is to be hoped that with ###is conflict now officially set###led no further obstructions###vill be put in Mr. Auster’s ###ay by his opponents. The ### which he now assumes ### of great importance, not only ###o the Jews in Jerusalem but ###lso to all of Jewish political ###fe in Palestine. No monkey ###rench should be thrown into ###he works. Otherwise the im###ression will be created that the opposition is directed against Mr. Auster personally and not against the fact that he was appointed by the Palestine government without consultation with certain Jewish organizations.
