A controversy erupted over whether female singers should perform at Israeli President Ezer Weizman’s swearing-in ceremony. Weizman, who is beginning his second term, first suggested that female singers in an army choir not perform at the ceremony in deference to religious Knesset members. But that idea drew strong objections from secular lawmakers, prompting Weizman to cancel all performances by artists at the ceremony.
