A Defense Ministry official said Tuesday that Israel’s arms purchases in the United States in 1977 would not exceed $1 billion compared to $1.5 billion this year. David Kochav, the ministry’s economic advisor, said the reduction was due to the half-billion dollar cut in U.S. aid for fiscal 1977. He also forecast a significant drop in Defense Ministry orders in Israel because of the ministry’s budget cuts and its mounting debt.
