A dispute erupted between Israel and the Palestinian Authority over control of the Al Aksa Mosque in Jerusalem. The two sides disputed a new office opened at the mosque by the Jerusalem mufti, or chief Muslim cleric, who was appointed by Palestinian officials in 1994. Israeli officials maintain that the office violates Israeli-Palestinian accords, which bar the Palestinian Authority from operating in Jerusalem.
