A false SOS, answered by the British destroyer Ivanhoe in territorial waters near here, today caused the accidental death of a sailor and the discovery of 400 refugees attempting illegal entry into Palestine. The sailor was killed when his gun went off by accident as he was boarding the steamer Las Perles from the Ivanhoe.
The Ivanhoe had put out in response to the steamer’s SOS, which proved to be a mistake, and found the refugees aboard. Warning the Las Perles not to enter territorial waters, the Ivanhoe arrested her when she persisted in doing so. The destroyer then escorted the steamer into Haifa.
