A family of Jewish immigrants was injured after lighting what they thought were religious candles but turned out to be powerful firecrackers. The Borokhova family, emigres from the former Soviet Republic of Uzbekistan celebrating their first Yom Kippur in their new Queens, N.Y., apartment, were lighting what they thought were four yahrzeit candles to commemorate the deaths of four relatives when the ritual ended in a violent explosion. All were treated and released for injuries caused by flying glass.
