A fervently Orthodox rabbi in Israel said the Lubavitch movement would cut all ties with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Calling Netanyahu a “crook and a swindler,” Rabbi Mordechai Ashkenazi told a group of followers that when the premier agreed last month to give an additional 13 percent of the West Bank to the Palestinians, he reneged on a promise he made during the 1996 election. Support from the fervently Orthodox community helped Netanyahu win that election.
