A former Jordanian ambassador to the United States was appointed the Hashemite kingdom’s prime minister. Fayez Tarawneh had also been leader of the Jordanian negotiating team that helped forge the historic 1994 peace treaty with Israel. The 49-year-old economist replaces Abdul Salam al-Majali, who was dismissed from the post by King Hussein because of his handling of domestic issues.
