A French court slapped a $21,000 fine on a French scholar for minimizing the extent of the Holocaust in a book he wrote, but the court stopped short of giving him a prison sentence. Roger Garaudy, 84, a former Marxist philosopher who converted to Islam, denied in his 1996 book, “The Founding Myths of Israeli Politics,” that 6 million Jews died in the Nazi gas chambers. After the verdict was issued, activists from Betar, a Zionist youth group, reportedly attacked four Arab journalists covering the trial.
