A fund of $25,000 will be sought to “carry this case to the highest court, if necessary.” Joseph Lewis, president of the Free Thinkers Society stated here yesterday, when he addressed a meeting of the Washington Secular League.
“On my return to New York tomorrow I will instruct our attorneys to proceed immediately to file an appeal from Justice Staley’s decision which he has just rendered adversely to our petition. After consultation with attorneys for the society, it will be determined whether we will also institute injunction proceedings specifically against the White Plains Board of Education.”
James Waterman Wise, 23 year old son of Dr. Stephen S. Wise, and author of the book “Liberalizing Liberal Judaism,” who was preparing for the rabbinate, stated in an interview with the representative of the New York “World” that he was disappointed with the present situation of Judaism and has decided to give up his rabbinical studies. He stated he hopes in the future to be able to lead some cultural Jewish movement.
