A German party suspended six members due to suspicion of right-wing extremist activities. Among those suspended this week by the Christian Social Union in the Bavarian city of Regensburg are Michael Lehner, district president of the party’s youth chapter, and his two vice presidents. The move followed years of controversy surrounding associates of Regensburg City Council member Thomas Furst, according to reports. Regensburg’s public prosecutor is investigating the six on charges of incitement, coercion and use of symbols of unconstitutional organizations. Bavarian Finance Minister Erwin Huber applauded the decision, telling the Tagesspiegel newspaper that right-wing radicalism had “no place in the CSU.” The CSU is the Bavarian sister party to Chancellor Angela Merkel’s governing Christian Democratic Union. German authorities have said they are more concerned about extremism on the far left and right than they are about Muslim extremism.
