A group that works to combat European racism issued an analysis that shows racism increased last year in the European Union.

The just-released report by The European Network Against Racism confirms a number of previous reports about the 27 E.U. member states.

“Shadow Report 2006” said last year “saw a notable rise in extremist organizations and political parties expressing racist sentiments, not only on the margins of politics but increasingly within the mainstream and even within the government.”

The network, which consists of 600 anti-racism, non-governmental organizations, in its report noted that Jews, Muslims and Gypsies were most likely to experience racism. The number of extreme-right, anti-immigrant organizations have increased in the former Eastern bloc, the report said.
