Funeral services will be held here tomorrow for Archibald J. Freiman, veteran Canadian Zionist leader and philanthropist, who died yesterday from a heart attack while attending synagogue services. He was 64 years old.
Mr. Freiman resigned as president of the Canadian Zionist Organization early this year, because of ill health, after having held that post for 25 years. Together with his wife, the later Lillian Frieman, who died in 1940, after having been president of Canadian Hadassah for 19 years, Mr. Freiman played a leading role in Zionist activities in the dominion since the movement was organized here. He was also a member of the Actions Committee of the World Zionist Congress and of the administrative council of the Jewish Agency.
Born in Wirballen, Lithuanaia, Mr. Freiman emigrated to Canada in 1893. With his father, he established the firm of A. J. Freiman Ltd., which became the largest department store in Ottawa. He was active in many Jewish communal and philanthropic groups in addition to his Zionist activities, serving as honorary vice-president of the Canadian Jewish Congress and honorary president of the Jewish Immigrant Aid Society.
