“Freeport is not large enough to hold you and the Klan”. This was the warning given to Ernest D. Lewis, Jewish owner of a drug store on Bayview Avenue, Freeport, on August 14th, by ten men who appeared that day in the store. They urged him to leave the city within ten days.
Last Monday night when Mr. Lewis walked home together with his wife and daughter-in-law, five men surrounded him, put him in an automobile without lights and disappeared. Mrs. Lewis declared to the police that the leader of the kidnapping gang appeared to have been one of the men who visited the store ten days ago, sounding the Klan warning.
