Deri, the leader of the fervently Orthodox Shas Party, would then stand trial for allegedly channeling funds to Shas-affiliated institutions during his terms as Interior Minister and director general of the ministry. Deri told the committee he would not oppose any lifting of his immunity if the attorney general agreed to put off the indictment for the public offenses until after the conclusion of his current trial for financial irregularities as a private citizen.
