A member of Israel’s Knesset proposed that a special unit be formed to monitor those members of the fervently Orthodox, or haredi, community who are exempted from compulsory military service in order to devote their lives to Torah study. Ran Cohen of the leftist Meretz Party claimed that some 20,000 haredim who receive military exemptions have paying jobs instead of attending a yeshiva.
