A member of the Israeli Knesset decided to postpone a vote on a bill that would impose fines on businesses that remain open on the Sabbath. Hanan Porat, a member of the National Religious Party and chairman of the Knesset Law Committee, reached the decision after seeing that the bill lacked the necessary support. Fervently Orthodox Jews demonstrated in Jerusalem during the past two weekends to protest a restaurant that remained open on the Sabbath.
