A member of the Knesset who called non-Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union “unsavory” and a security threat to the Jewish state should apologize for his remarks, said the treasurer of the Jewish Agency for Israel. “We cannot stand idly by when someone in a position of public standing makes such incitements to intolerance,” said Chaim Chesler. Shmuel Halpert, a member of the United Torah Judaism bloc, said Israel needs to amend its Law of Return to prevent the further influx of non-Jews.
