A memorial siren brought Israel to a standstill for two minutes on Monday, part of annual observances for Yom Hashoah. Flags throughout the country were at half-staff for the 24-hour memorial, and Israeli television showed films and documentary footage of the Holocaust. In Israel, many residents of the fervently Orthodox enclaves in Jerusalem and Bnei Brak went about their business despite the sirens in a show of indifference to the State of Israel’s secular institutions.
