A new enlarged and more modern home for the Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew Association of Washington Heights has been obtained by leasing from the Port Authority the building at 178th street and Fort Washington avenue on the George Washington Bridge Plaza, it was announced by Benjamin F. Schreiber, president of the Association.
The building, formerly the Jewish Center of Washington Heights, was purchased with other property in the neighborhood by the Port Authority for ultimate use in completing the approaches to the bridge. The Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew Association will move into its own home upon completion. of extensive alterations which are now under way.
Since its founding seventeen years ago by a group of Washington Heights leaders interested in the welfare of the young men and women of the section, the association has occupied a building at St. Nicholas avenue and 159th street, Although ample for its needs in the beginning, the Association’s activities have long since outgrown these quarters, but due to the economic situation of the past several years, no change has been possible until the opportunity of leasing from the Port Authority was presented.
