A Palestinian gunman killed two Israeli soldiers in an ambush outside Bethlehem. The deaths early Tuesday ended months of relative calm in the area. Security sources said the gunman who struck at the checkpoint outside the West Bank city on Tuesday managed to get close to the soldiers by hiding his rifle in a rolled-up prayer carpet.
